One of the most advanced interceptors in the world, capable of reaching Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound, unheard of then) this marvel was trashed by then Prime Minister Diefenbaker of Canada who bowed to pressure from U.S. President Eisenhower who didn't want competition for U.S. interceptors in production. Diefenbaker shut down the Arrow Project with no warning in 1959 and was responsible for Avro Canada's demise and the loss of employment for 14,528 Avro employees as well as about 15,000 supply chain job losses! Many of these workers were highly skilled engineers and scientists. Dozens were sought out by NASA to work on the Gemini and Apollo Space Programs after Diefenbaker "tossed them out". Rumours abound that one of the prototypes was spirited away and is still intact to this day. The rumour gained strength because when asked about it the head of Avro Canada simply said "I refuse to answer that question". A sad day for Canada.
