Today, I show you how to draw a whale. The drawing technique is almost the same that you've been using when learning how to draw killer whales in the previous lesson.
Whales, as you know, are probably the biggest and very intelligent sea creatures carrying a lot of wisdom that is still unknown.
The sad thing is that they were and still are hunted as if there is no tomorrow.
Every sea lover should know how to draw a whale, should it be only a simple sketch. It seems you love sea creatures too so this lesson will be fun.
Among so many types of whales, I picked a Humpback Whale because I believe it is one of the most popular types. Up to 16m long and weighing about 25T, this beautiful sea creature is one of the best fits to learn how to draw a whale.
Observe for a while this finished picture and try to imagine, only in your mind, how would you begin the basic sketch.
Sketch the central - belly part - noodle. It's a bit tilted. On both sides sketch two additions as you see in this picture.
These are the parts of the head and the tail.
Similarly, as in the previous step, sketch yet another "extension part" on each side but this time a bit slimmer and a bit pointed.
On the left end outline the flukes, in other words, the tail fin.
Sketch the rough shape of both pectoral fins.
You have now ready the basic rough sketch of the whale's body. Proportionally all looks good.
You've learned how to draw whales in their very simple and rough form.
Add the small bump on the whale's back, which will be the dorsal fin. Notice that the whale's dorsal fin is very small in comparison to the dorsal fins of shark or killer whale for instance.
Outline the shape of the mouth and the eye.
Begin sketching the throat grooves as you see in the picture.
Join all body parts together so that you will get a nice seamless body contour of the whale's body.
Refine a bit the tail fin line, the mouth line, etc.
A pen shaped eraser comes very handy while you're erasing the initial unnecessary pencil guidelines.
After erasing all pencil dust you should have a crispy clean contour line of your whale drawing, a perfect form for a coloring page.
Even if you stop the lesson here, you have basically learned how to draw a whale.
The rest is refining and coloring.
It is very helpful if you shade the whale's body by using a tilted pencil technique.
You can cover a much wider area with only one pencil stroke.
Humpback Whales have a white underbelly, so leave the underbelly part white or bright color.
The brighter color shade begins under the whale's chin, under the mouth.
